The Bonfim parish was founded in the year 1841 during the reign of Queen Maria II. The Bonfim church was designed by architect José Geraldo da Silva Sardinha and was built between 1874 and 1894, replacing a 1786 chapel. The front elevation, although extravagant with its twin bell towers, is rather simply decorated; the staircase dates from the early 19th century. The interior is plain, but well proportioned, and has some fascinating paintings.
