Covering over 40 hectares in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, is the Porto Alegre Botanical Garden. After several unsuccessful attempts at establishing a garden of this nature, beginning around the turn of the 19th Century, the Botanical Garden eventually opened its doors to the public in September of 1958. Famous for features like the cultivation of over 700 plant species, a Germplasm Bank, Seed Bank and Sapling Terrarium, in addition to rolling park lawns and open spaces, the Botanical Garden site is also home to a Zoological Park and Natural Sciences Museum. Visitors to the Garden enjoy the many educational exhibitions and programs, or the wonderful opportunity to do research. Guests can plan a tour of the many permanent and temporary exhibits, or simply spend a leisurely afternoon in the picturesque garden setting. The Garden is open from 8am-5pm from Wednesday to Sunday, and admissions are R$2 for Adults, R$1 for Seniors (60+ years) and Students, R$5 for a one-month multiple-entry pass, and free for children under 12 years of age. Visitors to Porto Alegre fly into the Slagado Filho International Airport, located less than 5 miles from downtown Porto Alegre.
