Bonnet House Museum and Gardens is located on a site bought by Hugh Taylor Birch in 1895 and is thought to be one of the first points of contact for Spanish explorers in the 1500s. Bonnet House is designed in the manner of a Caribbean plantation and today serves as an example of one of the best preserved early 20th century mansions.

Construction on the ground of Bonnet House began in 1920, when Birch’s daughter and son-in-law Frederick Bartlett began building a retreat to escape to from Chicago. Bartlett later put considerable work into the grounds along with his second wife, Evelyn, who eventually donated the site to the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation in 1983. The house has been preserved devotedly and all the furniture within is original.

Public tours are from 10-4 Tuesday through Saturday and from 12-4 on Sundays. The last tour is at 3 pm and doors close at 3:30. Admission is $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and $16 for children, children under 6 enter free. Group rates are available. Admission to the grounds alone is $10.
