Bontebok National Park

Hotels near Bontebok National Park, Swellendam, South Africa .

The Bontebok National Park is especially dedicated to one animal species, the bontebok, which is a rare antelope species characterized by a mostly brown body with a white stripe from its forehead to the nose and a white underside. The park is located on the foothills of the Langeberg Mountains in Swellendam, South Africa. It belongs to the World Heritage Site of Cape Floristic Region.

The Bontebok National Park covers an area on 27.86 sq. km., making it one of the smallest national parks in the country; it is also one of the very few species-specific national parks. One of the highlights in the park is the 6-day hiking trail up the Langeberg Mountains.

Although originally established in 1931 primarily for the protection of the bonteboks which are endemic to the Cape Floral region, there are other species thriving and are likewise protected in the park. Some of these are the blue crane which is the country’s national bird, Stanley’s bustard, duikers, and several grass and fynbos species.

To protect the species inside the Bontebok National Park, visitors are not allowed to bring pets, firearms, and motorized boats inside. The gates of the park are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. from October to April, and from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. from May to September.
