Boston Common

Hotels near Boston Common, Boston, United States .

One of the best assets of Boston is its number of green spaces, and one of its most famous is The Boston Common, which is sometimes mistakenly referred to by out-of-towners as Boston Commons. More than just a great place to work on your tan, play some frisbee, or romp about with dogs during the few warm summer months, The Boston Common is actually the oldest city park in the United States, seeing as its existence actually pre-dates our country's Constitution.

Extremely large, especially considering that it occupies some prime downtown real estate, it's possible to access The Boston Common from a number of the downtown streets, including Charles Street, Beacon Street, as well as Park Street. The common is also bordered by Boylston Street and Tremont, a busy downtown intersection that's also the home to Emerson College.

A number of historical sites are within the confines of Boston Common. One of the oldest burial grounds in the whole nation is right there, with tombstones that are long worn away by time. A number of public art pieces, especially sculpture, commemorating the revolutionary war are also found around the Common.

A number of important events have taken place in Boston Common over the years, including a number of protests, especially during the 1960s, at the height of The Vietnam War. The park has also been the site of some important speeches, such as one by Pope John Paul II, and concerts, like the hugest Judy Garland concert on record, with over 100,000 people there to see the singer.

The Common is park of a series of parks located within Boston referred to as The Emerald Necklace. Other popular green spaces in the city include The Public Gardens, The Arboretum, and Jamaica Pond. Pretty much every downtown hotel is just a short walk away, and many offer views of the Common, too.
