The Botanical Garden of Vilnius University (in Lithuanian: Vilniaus Universiteto Botanik Sodas) is a botanical garden of about 199 hectares with two cores: one smaller, in the historic city center of Vilnius, which corresponds to ex - botanical garden, and another on the outskirts of the city, which is the new and larger extension. The Garden reports administratively to the University of Vilnius.
The Botanical garden of Vilnius University was founded in 1781 by Professor JE Giliber (1741-1814). The gardens occupied an area of 300 m² and contained some 2,000 species of plants from various countries.
In 1832, when the university was closed, the introduced plants died and the botanical garden became a simple park. In 1919, a new botanical garden was started in Vingis park located in the valley of the River Neris in the western part of Vilnius.
Currently, the original garden is home to the Department of Plant Systematics and Geography. The botanical garden was moved in 1974 to a new location in the village of Kairenai, northeast of Vilnius.
The Garden hosts various cultural events such as concerts, art exhibitions and there is also possible to go riding or take horse carriage, rent a room for conferences (7 available rooms) and of course recreational picnics can be held here. The garden is also a research institute having as major trends: investigation of ornamental ligneous and herbaceous plants; selection of small fruit plants; genetic instability and mutagenic plants (barley, bean), genetic collections; micro propagation in vitro.
