Bielefeld Botanische Garten is a botanical garden located on the southern boundary of Wald Teutoburger belonging to Kahlenberg in the south western city of Bielefeld. International identification code is BEILF.
It was founded in 1912 as an extension for the St. John's Cemetery, until there were discovered the extraordinary diversity of plants on the site. In subsequent years, new plants were cultivated, so that the garden contained in 1915 about500 different species. In the Second World War, was used as farmland and in consequence the majority of the plants were destroyed. Today there are in the garden about 3000 different plant species.
In the center of the complex is a Westphalian Farmhouse built in 1823. The typical farm is shown in the logo of the nonprofit development association founded in 1998, Friends of the Botanic Garden Bielefeld. The Friends of the Botanical Garden initiated projects for development and maintenance of the Botanical Garden of Bielefeld.
The garden is divided into different natural habitats: Rockery, Alpinum, Aromatic and medicinal gardens, Heather Garden, Buchenwald Flora, Pond, Rose garden and Farntreppe. Another special feature of the Botanical Garden of Bielefeld is the Erdzeituhr which shows visitors the sequence and duration of geological eras. The park is open all year round while admission is free.
At the Botanical Garden of Bielefeld are offered varied activities, ranging from lectures and tours to musical performances. There are attractions for the whole family so in order for the parents to discover and visit various parts of the garden, the children are offered a playground to have fun.
