The Botanical Garden of Münster, in German: Botanischer Garten Münster is a botanical garden of 4.6 acres administered by the University of Münster (Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster). Its code of international recognition as an institution and its botanical herbarium is MSTR. It is located just behind the castle of the prince bishop, within the castle grounds.
The garden was started in 1803 by Freiherr vom Stein in connection to the medical faculty of the university, with the first of the greenhouses built in 1804. The famous botanist Carl Correns (1864-1933) led the garden between 1909 and 1915, with the first tropical greenhouse built in 1935. During World War II the garden was severely damaged, with all its greenhouses destroyed. However, before 1952, the garden was partially restored and five of the greenhouses had been rebuilt.
Today the garden contains some 8,000 species, including a major collection of Pelargonium in which 230 included the 280 known species. The garden has a total of 4.6 hectares (of which 2000 m 2 greenhouses). Besides ten greenhouses the important parts of the garden are as follows: Alpinum with collections of plants of the Alps and the Pyrenees; Arboretum, with collections of birch and oak designed like a forest with Tilia; Plant collections from Australia and New Zealand; Garden of the decade of 1900, where they grow vegetables and herbs; plants in the region of the Mediterranean; Greenhouse Tropical House of Victoria, hosting Victoria regia. The garden contains a fine selection of rare and mature specimens of trees in their arboretum, including a few specimens of orange trees 200 years old. The garden hosts exhibitions, cultural events, children birthday parties and various other manifestations all the year long.
