The Brandenburg Gate is a former city gate and one of the main symbols of Berlin, Germany. It is situated in the west of the city at the juncture of Unter den Linden and Ebertstrasse, west of Potsdamer Platz. It is the only remaining gate in a series of entrances into the city. It was commissioned by Frederick William II of Prussia, and built from 1788 to 1791. The Gate has 12 Doric columns, six to each side, and was based on the Propylaea, the Gateway to the Acropolis in Athens.

After the Second World War, the city was divided into two, East and West Germany, by the Berlin wall, which was pulled down in 1989.
