Instead of being housed in a more traditional building, visitors are actually ascending the five stories inside of the bridge tower, and learning more with each new floor, since each story talks about a different period in the Chicago River's history.

For travelers with children who delight at seeing how things work, visiting The The McCormick Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum is a great idea because, as you're inside of a former bridge tower where bridge tenders used to open and close the bridge from inside, all of the original equipment is still there, and you can learn how bridges were raised and lowered back in the day. Even just casual visitors will be excited about the view from such a unique structure, and in a city packed with museums where there's often a rush on, it's nice to take a break and enjoy something more laid-back and intimate.

The The McCormick Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum is open seasonally, until Halloween, from Thursday through Monday, from ten in the morning until five in the afternoon. A number of hotels are right nearby due to the museum's centrally located spot in Chicago's loop, including The River Hotel, Hotel 71, and even a Comfort Suites.
