The Broel Towers are a monument in Kortrijk, Belgium; they span the Lys River and were linked by a bridge, part of which remains. Although both towers look identical, they were in fact, built at different times. The Southern Tower, the Speytoren was built in 1385 to control traffic on the River Lys, and was part of a fortified mediaeval castle. The north tower, Ingelborchtoren was built in 1415 and was an armoury. Together they form one of the last remaining parts of the city fortifications.

The mediaeval centre of Kortrijk is car free and well preserved. It is a Flemish city, but dates back to Gallo Roman times. Attractions include the late Gothic early Renaissance Town Hall, whilst to the north of the market square lies St Elisabeth's Beguinage, a convent of a catholic lay sisterhood. The buildings of the old town with their white facades and red tiled roofs attract visitors, as does the Belfry of Kortrijk in the market place. There is also a museum of Flax in honour of the plant that brought prosperity to the town.

Close to the Towers is the Parkhotel, which has four stars and which offers a Jacuzzi, sauna and solarium. It is situated near to the railway station and a room here costs from 93 Euros per night. The Best Western Hotel Belfort (www.bestwestern.com) has three stars and is in the corner of the market square in front of the Town Hall. It offers a bistro and terrace. A room here costs from 65 Euros per night.
