Located on the River Rhine, is Germany's fourth-largest city Cologne (after Berlin, Hamburg and Munich). Cologne is the largest city both in the German Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia and within the Rhine-Ruhr Metropolitan Area. It is also one of the main European metropolitan areas with more than 10 million residents. Cologne is one of the oldest cities in Germany and was founded by the Romans in the year 38 BC.
Cologne is famous for its Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom); it is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Cologne. The Dom is in fact Germany’s largest cathedral. The construction for the cathedral began in 1248, and was completed in 1880. The gigantic building covers a surface area of 8,000 sq. m.; both the towers stand 157mts tall.
Cologne is rich in cultural heritage, there are many historical monuments, museums and shopping centers that the visitors can see and enjoy.
The Roman-Germanic Museum is among the most loved places in Germany. It houses artifacts from the Roman times, such as; Poblicus’ tomb, the Dionysus mosaic and it also has the largest collection of Roman glass in the whole world.
Hohe Strasse (English: High Street) is one of the major shopping areas. This street is mainly popular with tourists and you can find many clothing stores, gift shops, fast food restaurants and electronic goods dealers.
Cologne has a railway service with Deutsche Bahn Intercity and ICE-trains stopping at Köln Hauptbahnhof (Cologne Central Station), Köln-Deutz station and at Cologne Bonn Airport (Konrad-Adenauer-Flughafen). There are also the ICE and Thalys high-speed trains that link Cologne with Amsterdam, Brussels. There are also numerous buses that cover most of the city and surrounding suburbs, and Eurolines coaches that go up to London via Brussels.
