Brussels is the capital of Belgium; it is also the de facto capital city of the European Union (EU) and the largest urban area in Belgium. It comprises of 19 municipalities, including the City of Brussels proper, it is also the capital of Flanders and the French Community of Belgium.
Brussels has grown from being a 10th century fortress town into a metropolis of more than 1 million inhabitants. After the end of the Second World War, Brussels became an important centre for international politics, the home of the main EU institutions as well as the headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Thought the main language spoken in Brussels was Dutch, Brussels became predominantly French-speaking over the 19th and 20th centuries. Today most of the inhabitants are native French-speakers, but both languages have official status.

Belgian cuisine is one among the best in Europe and this is clearly visible in all the restaurants in and around Brussels. Belgian cuisine is a combination of Belgian and French cuisine. The Brussels waffles and mussels served with French fries is a must for any visitor.
Brussels is served by Brussels Airport, which is located in the Flemish municipality of Zaventem, and by the smaller Brussels South Charleroi Airport, about 50 km from Brussels. There are also direct high-speed rail links: to London by the Eurostar, to Cologne and Frankfurt by the German ICE and to Amsterdam, Paris and Cologne by the Thalys. There is also a wide-ranging bus and tram network that covers the entire city.
