The Gare Central or, more commonly known as Central Station is a station located on the North-South junction that connects Gare du Nord and Gare du Midi. This is the busiest station in Belgium with around 140 000 passengers per day, although it has only six lanes.

The construction of the station in town was already planned before the First World War by Horta. After his death in 1947, Maxim Brunfaut continues his work. All trains using the North-South junction stop here except for Thalys, ICE and the few night trains. The station was until recently under renovation. Work began in late 2005 with the construction of a new entrance near the Mont des Arts. Nearly 22 million Euros have been invested in the construction of the entrance and in the lengthening of platforms. New escalators, staircases and elevators have been installed.

Next to the main entrance of the station there is a major bus stop which is served by bus routes 29, 38, 63, 65, 66 and 71. The closest train station is South Station Brussels and the nearest airports are Zaventem, Palace of the Nation and Deurne, 20 km away from the Gare Central.
