Bryggen

Hotels near Bryggen, Bergen, Norway .

Bryggen is the old wharf of Bergen, it serves as a reminder of the town’s importance as part of the Hanseatic League’s trading empire from the 14th to the mid-16th century. Bryggen has since 1979 been on the UNESCO list for World Cultural Heritage sites. Bryggen is situated next to the famous Fish Market in Bergen. In the late Middle ages the Hanseatic League established the German Kontor in Bryggen (the waterfront), which became a thriving center of international trade. The distinctive parallel rows of buildings, with their seaward-facing gables represent a building tradition dating back almost 900 years. The place has gone through some tough times with fires, there have been many fires, the last in 1955, that have ravaged the characteristic wooden houses of Bryggen. However, its rebuilding has traditionally followed old patterns and methods, leaving behind its main structure well preserved. The structure is a relic of an ancient wooden urban structure once common in Northern Europe. Today, some 62 buildings remain of this former townscape. Today, Bryggen is popular among tourist, there are many souvenir, and gift shops, in addition to restaurants, pubs and museums. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryggen
