The Bucharest Aurel Vlaicu Airport (ICAO identifier: LRBS) is located in the Baneasa district, 8.5 kilometers north of Bucharest. Until 1968 when the Otopeni Airport was built, it was Bucharest’s only airport. Aurel Vlaicu is the second most heavily-trafficked airport in Romania.

The Baneasa airport is the oldest continually operating airport in Eastern Europe and one of the five oldest in the world, having first hosted flights by the French pilot and aviation pioneer, Louis Bleriot in 1909. In 1912, the first flight school in Romania was opened there. When the current terminal building was opened in 1952, it was considered one of the finest architectural features of Bucharest. The building resembles an airplane propeller on that it consists of a central domed hub with three distinct wings.

The terminal building was not built to cope with 800,000 passengers per day and a departure every 25 minutes. Therefore, the facilities are undersized and crowded. Particularly noticeable are the baggage claim, departure lounge and passport control areas. Also, long queues often form for check-in, as there are only six check-in desks for the entire facility. Because the building is a landmark, it cannot be expanded.

Bucharest is accessible by the RATB Tramway 5 and RATB buses plus several highways. An extension of the M4 line of the Bucharest Metro, which will link Aurel Vlaicu to the main train station and the larger Henri Coanda International airport, was approved in 2006 and is currently in the planning stages.

A number of European and international chain hotels are within easy distance, as the airport is only 8 kilometers from Bucharest. In the immediate vicinity of Aurel Vlaicu, however, there are few large lodging facilities. Hotel rooms can be purchased from 55 Euros.
