Dedicated in 1927, the Buckingham Fountain is today one of Chicago's most well-known landmarks. The fountain, which sits atop Grant Park, was designed with sculptures by Jacques Lambert and created by the French sculptor Marcel F. Loyau. The water fountain is said to symbolize Lake Michigan, and each of the sea horses represents one of the states bordering the Lake. The name is derived from its original patrons; it was donated by Kate Buckingham in honor of her deceased brother, Clarence. The design was modeled after the Latrona Fountain at Versailles. Today the water funs from 8:00 a.m.-11:00 p.m. from mid-April to mid-October. Each 20 minute water display begins on the hour, and at dusk, there is also a light and music show to accompany the waterworks. This beautiful and historical fountain is one Chicago landmark that should not be missed!
