Buckingham Palace is the official London residence of the British monarch. Located in the City of Westminster, the palace is a setting for state occasions and royal hospitality. It has been a rallying point for the British people at times of national rejoicing and crisis.
Buckingham Palace was originally known as Buckingham House. The building was a large townhouse built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703 on a site which had been in private ownership for at least 150 years. In 1761 it was acquired by George III as a private residence for Queen Charlotte, and became known as "The Queen's House". During the 19th century it was enlarged, mainly by architects John Nash and Edward Blore, three wings were formed around a central courtyard. Buckingham Palace finally became the official royal palace of the British monarch on the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837.
During the Palace’s Summer Opening in August and September when the Queen goes on her annual visit to Balmoral, the state rooms, used for official and state entertaining, are open to the public. The State rooms house some of the Royal family’s greatest treasures including paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens, Poussin and Canaletto. They are also exquisitely furnished with some of the finest French and English furniture.
The Changing of the Guard takes place in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace every day at 11.30 during summer and every other day in winter, the changing of the Guard lasts for about 45 minutes.
The nearest tube stations are Green Park, Victoria, Hyde Park Corner and St. James's Park.
