Budapest Ferihegy International Airport (ICAO: LHBP) is the largest of five international airports in Hungary and serves the country’s capital. The airport primarily offers connections within Europe, but also to the Middle East, Africa, Asia and North America. Over 8.6 million passengers were served by the airport in 2007. Although the airport can accommodate jumbo jets, most of traffic is comprised of Airbus and Boeing twin jets, plus some long-haul Boeing 767’s. Thirty-nine airlines, plus an additional nine cargo carriers, transit the field. When weather diversions are necessary, aircraft are generally routed to Bratislava or Vienna. In 2007, the renovation of Terminal 1 at Ferihegy was awarded Europe’s most prestigious heritage preservation prize, the Europa Nostra award. The protected monument spaces, central hall, gallery and furniture at T1 were all renovated. The airport is located 16 kilometers east-southeast of the center of Budapest and is accessible by the Ulloi Road. Hungarian State Railways runs both suburban and long-distance services between Terminal 1 and the Nyugati Railway Station in central Budapest. The journey requires about 25 minutes costs 300 HUF. Trains run 2-3 times per hour. In addition, mass transit articulated buses depart for the city center every 8-12 minutes. These airport buses run to the starting station of the M3 underground line (Kobanya-Kispest). The underground trains may also be boarded at stops at the Ecsari ut or Nagyvarad ter stations. Several companies offer shuttle buses to the city, and taxis are available. The typical taxi fare to downtown Budapest is 4500-5500 HUF. Cars may be rented in the city, thus avoiding the additional fee charged for renting at the airport.
