Hotels near Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society, Buffalo (New York), United States .

Located on Nottingham Court in the city of Buffalo in New York, the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society was built in 1901 for that year’s Pan American Exposition and is the only structure remaining from it. The building is one of Buffalo’s most impressive architectural works, inspired by the Parthenon in Athens, Greece. In fact, it is so remarkable that in 1987 it was designated a National Historic Landmark.

Visitors of the Buffalo & Erie Count Historical Society will find the largest collection of Pan-American Exposition artifacts in the world. Housed in the building are over 80,000 items ranging from art to motor vehicles to medals. Besides the permanent exhibits at the historical society’s museum including the Native American Gallery and the Street of Shops, temporary exhibitions are also put into place. In 2009, an exhibit was set up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Buffalo Bills of the NFL.

The Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society also contains a research library that maintains manuscripts, photographs and rare book collections including letters and records of famous Americans. Special subjects covered extensively by research library materials include Niagara Falls and the Erie Canal.
The museum and the research library operate on different hours, and some visits require appointments. Those considering passing through should visit www.bechs.org to confirm schedules before attending. Admission into the museum and the research library is $6 for adults, with varying prices for students, children, and senior citizens. Members of the historical society enter free (September 2009). Both the Holiday Inn and the Doubletree Club are located quite close to the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society and are excellent stay options for out-of-town visitors looking to be in a convenient location.
