Buffalo Lighthouse

Hotels near Buffalo Lighthouse, Buffalo (New York), United States .

Established in the year 1818 and first lit in 1833, the Buffalo Lighthouse is one of the earliest lighthouses in American and Great Lakes history. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is designated a City of Buffalo, Niagara Frontier and American Civil Engineering landmark. In its early years, it welcomed immigrants to the nation’s heartland.

Though the landmark remained dark for many years, it was re-lighted in 1987 to open the first international Friendship Festival. Today, the tower is open during waterfront festivals and for group tours. The South Pier Promenade and the Lighthouse Point grounds near the tower are open daily, and those seeking a simple view can see the lighthouse from the Erie Basin Marina.

Restoration efforts of the Buffalo Lighthouse are ongoing to ensure the upkeep of this historical building. Since 1985, over $300,000 has been invested in renewals and repairs. The Buffalo Lighthouse is a historical site not to be missed on the Buffalo tourism circuit. With hotels like the Hyatt Regency nearby, tourists will have no excuse but to make a stop at this historical landmark.
