Vietnam Veteran and African-American military historian Paul Matthews founded the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum in 2000. It is dedicated to honoring and remembering black American military service.

The name Buffalo Soldier dates back to the Civil War era. The original Buffalo Soldiers were members of the U.S. 10th Cavalry Regiment (formed as a segregated African American unit) of the United States Army formed in September of 1866. The nickname Buffalo Soldier itself actually originated with the Cheyenne warriors who fought the regiment in 1867 (though the origin of the name is debated even today). The Buffalo Soldiers were established by Congress as the first peacetime all-black regiment in the regular United States Army, rendering the group an important part of military and cultural history.

The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum is open and conducts tours Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is $2.00 per person. The museum also encourages interested parties to become members.
