It cannot be denied that one of the best selling products of South Africa is its wines. In Cape Town, apart from Groot Constantia, there is also another place that produces great quality wine as well. The place is called the Buitenverwachting Wine Estate, and it has been around since 1866.
The farm is set on the eastern slopes that face the magnificent Constantiaberg, just approximately 12 kilometers from False Bay. It was originally a part of the Constantia Estate that was founded by Simon van der Stel (the first Governor of the new Dutch colony). It was then sold as a 200 morgen sub-division in 1773 to Cornelis Brink. Since then the area changed too often, yet it managed to stay aloft by its flourishing vineyard.
One of the interesting things that can be noted in Buitenverwachting Wine Estate is the fact that despite the numerous changes, there is one small block of Hanepoot table grapes that has been kept alive, bearing fruit even at its old age of almost 100 years. This is said to be a growing reminder and a tribute to the heritage which the estate is known for.
