Bulow Plantation Ruins State Park is a state park west of Flagler Beach, popular for canoeing, hiking, bicycling, fishing and picnicking. The site of ruins of an antebellum plantation, the park was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.

Started in 1821 as a cotton, rice and cane plantation, the Bulow’s home, slave cabins, wells and sugar mill were all hit hard by the Second Seminole War of 1836, leaving the place abandoned in its original state. Besides the fascinating ruins of a time which has disappeared, the Bulow Creek is one of the park’s highlights.

The Bulow Plantation Ruins State Park is open Thursday through Monday from 9am until 5pm, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Admission fees are $4 per car with a limit of 8 people per vehicle. For cyclists and pedestrians, the fee is $2 per person. The picnic pavilion can be rented for $30 per day.

Accommodations in the area tend toward budget motels in the immediate vicinity. There are choices like the Country Hearth Inn and Bulow Plantation Motel just at the outer edges of the property. Towards Flagler Beach area, there are a number of classic beachfront motels on Oceanshore Blvd. The Whale Watcher Motel has a charm that’s been enjoyed by most visitors. The Island Cottage Villas and Beach Front Motel are two other winning choices.
