A walk along the murky waters of Huangpu River provides an astounding view of the old Shanghai imminent in the block of buildings known as the Bund. This district is a well-known highlight of Shanghai, a grand reminder of its illustrious past. Most of the European buildings epitomize the old-world sophistication highly visible during the bygone eras.

In the early 1800s, the Bund was a predominantly British settlement located in the outskirts of what was once a walled city. In the middle of the same century, it combined with the American occupied area and other non-Chinese concessions to create an international settlement in Shanghai.

Some of the most widely acclaimed buildings on this block include the neo-classical Shanghai Club and the HSBC Buildings, baroque style Union Building and the Greek-like Customs House. Sassoon House and its pyramid copper roof were constructed in 1920s.

Bund, which means embankment, stretches a mile long starting from Yan’an Road and ends at Waibadu Bridge. The major access point for the Bund is through the metro station of East Nanjing Road. To get the most out of one’s visit to the Bund, a stay at the Peace Hotel is well recommended. If on limited budget, try any of the decently priced hotels such as Metropole Hotel, Jiulong Hotel and Classical Hotel.
