Bunratty Castle is one of the finest surviving examples of an Irish tower house. Looking at the magnificent castle it is hard to believe that it has had such a bloody and violent history. Strategically located on the Shannon River, made it the centre of many battles. The Bunratty Castle has been destroyed and re-built on at least eight different occasions. Bunratty Castle and Folk Park was built in 1425 by the McNamara family on the site of an earlier Viking settlement, and later acquired by the Anglo-Irish Studdart family.
The Normans were the first to build stone castles with a "motte and bailey" - a watch tower on a artificial hill, surrounded by a stockade, to protect their property from invaders. The Irish chieftains soon copied this means of defense, mainly during the 15th century when there were over 80 tower houses in the baronies of Bunratty and Tulla.
This magnificent 15th century castle had a dramatic history and has been beautifully restored. You can take a tour of the castle and enjoy the beautiful architecture inside. It reflects the great stronghold of the O' Briens, kings and later earls of Thomond.
The park contains reconstruction's of a 19th century Irish village where you can spend an evening experiencing life in Ireland during from the 19th century or you can have a glass of Guinness at the local pub.
