The Aspen Institute is a nonprofit organization which began in 1950 through the dedication of local citizen Walter Paepcke. Its goal is the promotion and encouragement of enlightened thinking and open-minded leadership. It has partner institutes around the world, in such far-flung places as India, Japan, Germany, and Italy, as well as other American branches in Washington, D.C. and Maryland.
