Opened in September of 1950, Byrd Stadium is the home of the Maryland Terrapins football and lacrosse teams. It was named for Harry “Curley” Byrd, an athlete with a long relationships with the University of Maryland in College Park. Over the years, the stadium has been remodeled and expanded, and plans for more renovations are currently underway. One of Byrd Stadium’s most interesting claims to fame is that Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip saw their first game of American football there in 1957.

Visitors to the area are encouraged to stop by the stadium to take a look or to attend a fast-paced football or lacrosse game. On a clear day, some of the tallest structures in Washington D.C. can be viewed from atop the stadium, including the Washington Monument and the United States Capitol. Located near the Marriott and the Quality Inn, it is just steps away from other great College Park attractions. More information about the stadium and Maryland athletics as a whole can be found at www.umterps.com.
