Chamonix-Mont-Blanc or, more commonly, Chamonix is situated near the massive peaks of the Aiguilles Rouges. Chamonix-Mont-Blanc is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. Chamonix-Mont-Blanc was the site of the 1924 Winter Olympics. Chamonix shares both the summit of Mont Blanc and the title of highest commune in France with its neighboring commune, Saint-Gervais-les-Bains. The area is very popular and loved by skiers and by mountain athletes of all types. Mont Blanc, stands at a height of 4810 meters and is the third most visited natural site in the world. This lends the area a notably cosmopolitan atmosphere. With an area of 245 square kilometers, Chamonix is the fourth largest commune in mainland France. The belvedere is accessible from Chamonix by the popular cable car. You can board a cable car for the Aiguille de Midi and even on to Italy. The journey is extremely fascinating, filled with amazing sights that need to be seen to be experienced to be believed. From the centre of Chamonix at 1035 m, the Aiguille du Midi cable car carries you to 3842 m into the realm of high mountain peaks. A unique 360 degree panorama of the Mont-Blanc chain awaits you. The cable car is a tiny cogwheel train that brings you from Chamonix to the mer de glace, a wonderful glacier. From there you can go for hikes or just hang around to soak in stunning views. It's a classic, yet unforgettable, day trip from Chamonix. Prices are from € 10, the cable cars run from 8 A.M. in the morning right through the day.
