Cabot, Bristol is a council ward that covers the centre of Bristol. It derives its name from the Cabot Tower - a memorial tower which was built on Brandon Hill to commemorate John Cabot's voyage and "discovery" of North America.
Cabot contains the whole of the medieval city and many of the oldest surviving buildings. Cabot also includes the Bristol's Docks, the University of Bristol and the City Centre. Cabot has at least 17 churches, a cathedral, a synagogue, three hospitals, two theatres, four museums, two concert halls, and art galleries and cinemas.
The Cabot Tower in Cabot is a popular tourist attraction, the views are magnificent and you can walk around and view Bristol's skyline from every angle. The tower commemorates the 'discovery' of North America by John Cabot, who sailed from Bristol. The walk to the tower is uphill, and then followed by a large winding staircase - so it is not suitable for those who are sickly or physically unfit.
The Bristol City Centre falls smack in the center of the Cabot. It is considered to be the circus of Colston Avenue and Saint Augustine's Parade. Because of Bristol's lop-sided growth - hemmed in by the Avon Gorge - this is nowhere near the actual centre of the city any more.
Another fantastic place is the Castle Park right next to Bristol's main shopping precinct, Broadmead. It is the perfect place to rest after a hard day work - spending money! The park borders the Floating Harbor and looks on to Bristol Bridge. The park contains some ruins of Bristol Castle.
Though Cabot contains Bristol Coach and Bus Station, and the city centre, you might think that getting around would be really easy. Unfortunately, Bristol's traffic problem is legendarily bad, and the ward that suffers most heavily for this is Cabot.
