When people discuss United States history and the first people to set foot on the continent (besides those who were already here) the focus inevitably turns to the East Coast. From the Carolinas to Massachusetts, there are many monuments documenting important firsts.

But the East Coast isn't the only site of important first landings. Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego is where the first European expedition ever landed on the West Coast, back in 1542. President Woodrow Wilson decreed that there be a monument built to commemorate the event, and in the 1930s, a statue was finally built and placed in the historic spot.

Located at the very southern point of the Point Loma Peninsula, Cabrillo National Monument is a popular spot for locals and visitors to enjoy beautiful views of the Pacific, as well as the occasional festival or celebration. Whale watchers flock to the area near the statue to see the grey whales, and kids love to play in the nearby tidal pools. There are also special events held yearly, including the Cabrillo Festival Open House and special Mexican, Portuguese, and Kumeyaay festivals with dancing, food, and reenactments at different points in the year.

Open daily from dawn until dusk, the Cabrillo National Monument is a popular spot to watch the sun set and rise, as well as to take in some incredible views of downtown San Diego. A number of hotels are just a short drive away, including Hotel Del Coronado, Kona Kai Resort Hotel, and the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina.
