Caernafon Airport (ICAO: EGCK) is located 7.4 kilometers southwest of the historic town of Caernafon, Gwynedd, Wales in the United Kingdom. Caernafon is a world heritage site. The airdrome has a CAA Ordinary License (Number P866) that allows flights for the public transport of passengers or for flying instruction. Air Caernarfon Limited holds the license. The aerodrome is not licensed for night use. Located at the aerodrome are a large cafe, a maintenance hangar, a visitor center and a shop. The latter are part of the site’s Aviation Museum. The visitor can take a trip back in time when visiting the Aviation Museum at Caernarfon Airport, known as Caernafon Airworld. The museum houses an extensive collection of aircraft ranging from Hunter, Seahawk, Javelin and Vampire to the Westland Whirlwind helicopter. All are displayed amongst authentic flying scenes and true stories from the Second World War. The airfield at Caernarfon played an important role during the war. It was an RAF station where Bomber Command navigators, radio operators, bomb aimers and gunners were trained. It was also the home of one of the RAF's first Mountain Rescue Teams formed by Flt Lt George "Des" Graham, considered the father of today’s RAF Mountain Rescue Service. For his pioneering efforts, he was awarded MBE in 1943. In addition, he earned the DSO and Burma Star for his participation in a daring rescue behind Japanese lines in Burma in 1944. The museum is very 'hands-on' and provides the opportunity to sit inside some of the cockpits. Hundreds of model aircraft fill the museum, including some that are quite rare. There also is a small cinema that shows aviation footage available for purchase from the museum gift shop. Exhibits include: RAF Search and Rescue display, Mountain Rescue Service display, Tiger Moth construction project, Westland Whirlwind helicopter, Sea Hawk, History of the RAF, History of the Fleet Air Arm, Varcity simulator, Percival Prince, Javelin, Venom, Hunter MK1, Hunter T9 trainer, Jindevik, Link trainer and the Sycamore helicopter. The nearby town of Caernafon boasts a number of three and four star hotels. In addition, Bangor University hosts the Management Centre. http://www.air-world.co.uk/
