Cahir Castle is one of the largest castles in Ireland; it was built in County Tipperary in 1142 by Conor O'Brien, Prince of Thomond, on an island in the river Suir. Cahir Castle is now situated in the town centre; the castle is well preserved and has guided tour and audiovisual shows in multiple languages. Once the stronghold of the powerful Butler family, the castle retains its impressive keep, tower and much of its original defensive structure. Cahir is an excellent example of a late Medieval Castle that had been enlarged and greatly remodeled in the 15th to 17th centuries. With the demise of the main members of the Butler family in the late 1700's, the castle fell into ruin. The castle was partly restored in the 1840's by the Cahir Butlers and more extensively restored after becoming a National Monument in 1964. Among the restorations was the faithfully reproduced portcullis, one of a number of defenses the castle possessed. The Castle is a great place to wander around to take in its beauty, but on a guided tour with one of the staff of the Castle, you will truly be able to understand its unique history and enjoy the various beautiful buildings.
