The Cairns Airport is an international and domestic airport in Cairns. Operated by the Cairns Port Authority, the airport sits between Mount Whitfield on the west and Trinity Bay on the east. What used to be a mangrove swamp is now the reclaimed airport land. The domestic terminal’s departure lounge is currently undergoing a $200 million renovation and is expected to be finished in late 2010.

This airport serves as the major base for not only the Australian Airlines but also the Royal Flying Doctor Service and as well as the Queensland Emergency Service search and rescue helicopters.

The systems for checking in are also being expanded to include all airline facilities. The airport has two terminals for passengers located on the east side on a reclaimed mangrove swamp. The two separate terminals are in two different buildings 656 feet from each other.

Rental cars are available for passengers at the domestic terminal and buses to Cairns and Port Douglas depart hourly from here as well. Twenty-four hour taxis are also available and cost about twelve dollars to the centre of Cairns.

Airport hotels include the Hilton Cairns, Comfort Inn Tropical Queenslander, Cairns International Hotel, Shangri-La Hotel Marina Cairns, Matson Resort Cairns and the Cairns Colonial Club Resort.
