Cairo Citadel

Hotels near Cairo Citadel, Cairo, Egypt .

It is considered one of the most visited tourist attractions in Cairo today, Cairo Citadel is located at the Muquttam hills. The origin of the Citadel’s construction dates back to the twelfth century. Historically, the area was built and fortified by an Ayyubid ruler by the name of Saladin to protect his kingdom from the Crusaders. He built a wall to surround and enclose both Cairo and Fustat. The Citadel is built in an area of the Muquttam hills that make an attack difficult if not impossible.

Cairo Citadel was used to house the government when it was built as it was the headquarters of Saladin. The Citadel later evolved into a government center in the nineteenth century. One of the area’s famous sights to see is the Well of Joseph or the Well of Spiral which was built to provide water to the complex. It has 300 stairs that wind spirally around the inside of the well.

Other sights to see are the Mosque of al-Nasir Muhammad from the Early Bahri Mamluk period, the Mosque of Suleyman Pasha, and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali al-Kabir.

The Citadel is open for visitors from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. everyday. Admission fee is LE 20.00. Nearby hotels in the area are the Bostan Hotel, Happy City Hotel, Alexander Hotel, Cairo Center Hotel and the New Garden Palace Hotel.
