One of Calgary's most popular tourist destinations, as well as a favorite spot for locals with children, is The Calgary Zoo. The second largest zoo in the whole country, The Calgary Zoo is located just east of the city's bustling downtown, and is easy to get to by The C-Train Light Rail system, as well as by car or taxi.

Organized by geographic region, the zoo's exhibits showcase, in total, thousands of different animals. In addition to exhibits with names like Canadian Wilds, Eurasia, and Destination Africa, The Calgary Zoo also has a calm Botanical Gardens.

The zoo's different regions are broken up by geograpical area. Destination Africa includes an African Savannah and a mini-rainforest, with a number of imported plants and flowers. Over at The African Savannah are a number of red river hogs, giraffes, and hippos. The zoo, in addition to having this Africa exhibit, also works closely with The Ghana Hippo Sanctuary, in Africa, as one of its outreach conservation projects.

The Canadian Wilds includes most animals one associates with Canada, such as moose, grizzly bears, and wolves. Nearby is Australia, the zoo's small collection of kangaroos, wallabies, and other smaller reptiles and mammals from Australia and its surrounding islands.

The zoo's most ambitious habitats were South America, with its exotic collection of giant anteaters, two-toed sloths, and different species of monkeys, and Arctic Shores, a project planned for animals from Antarctica, including King Penguins.

Open every day of the year from nine until six except for Christmas, The Calgary Zoo has a number of popular annual events, including Zoolights, where for the month of December, the zoo is decked out in the most Christmas lights of any building in all of Calgary.

A number of downtown hotels are just a short drive from The Calgary Zoo, including The Calgary Marriott Hotel, The Delta Bow Valley Hotel, and The Fairmont Palliser.
