California State University Sacramento is one of several institutions of higher education making up the California State University system. California State University Sacramento has approximately 29,000 students enrolled on either a part time or full time basis at the school, making it one of the largest in the country. Founded in 1947 under the name of Sacramento State College, the school entered the California State University system and adopted its present name by 1960. Despite this, the school continues to be widely referred to as simply "Sac State" and in fact as of 2004 the school has effectively "rebranded" itself.

In recent years the school has undergone some modest expansion and renovation, not to be compared with its "Golden Period" between 1984 and 2003 which saw the school's budget and size grow tremendously, and a new parking lot, an Alumni Center, and Academic Information Resource Center have all been added to the campus. The school has a relatively solid reputation at the national level, and was recently ranked as the 57th best place to get a Master's degree by the US News and World Report in 2007.
