Calton Hill is a hill situated in central Edinburgh, Scotland, just to the east of the New Town. Because of its strategic location views of, and from, the hill are often used in photographs and paintings of the city. The perfect time to take pictures from Calton Hill in the summer is very early in the morning, when the sun is just coming up from behind Salisbury Crags or when the sun is setting. Calton Hill is the headquarters of the Scottish Government based at St Andrew's House, on the steep southern slope of the hill. Carlton hill also includes numerous monuments and buildings: the Dugald Stewart Monument, the National Monument, Nelson's Monument, the Robert Burns Monument, the New Parliament House, the City Observatory and the Political Martyrs' Monument. Carton hill was formerly part of the Barony of Calton which was abolished in 1856. In 1456, King James II of Scotland permitted the residents of Edinburgh to use the North West slope of the hill for "tilts and tournaments". Calton Hill is a famous venue for a number of events throughout the year. The biggest of all the events that take place here is the Beltane Fire Festival held on the 30th of April every year; the event is attended by over 12,000 people. Another important festival that takes place on Carlton Hill at the beginning of October every year is the Dussera Hindu Festival. The acropolis- originally called the "National Monument" is an unfinished monument in Carlton Hill. IT was initiated in the year 1816, a year after Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo; it was meant to be a replica of the Parthenon in Athens, as a memorial to those who had died in the Napoleonic Wars. The work began in 1822, but since the funds ran dry only the front elevation of the building completed and hence it was dubbed "Edinburgh's shame". From Glasgow Airport, you can easily get to Carlton Hill by making use of the public transport system.
