Cambridge Science Park is the oldest and most prestigious science park in United Kingdom. It is located on the north-eastern edge of the City of Cambridge. The land has belonged to Trinity College since its foundation by King Henry VIII in 1546. Until World War II it was farm land. The decision to develop the park was taken in 1970. In autumn 1973 the first company, Laser-scan, moved into the building. In the first five years, the Cambridge Science Park grew very slowly because of the unfamiliar concept that the park proposed. Most of the companies moved into the park because of the University’s scientific research. However, the number of the companies slowly grew to 25 by the end of the 1970s. In the 21st century, a number of projects have already been completed (a new conference centre, restaurant and bar, a new fitness centre etc.) and others are still in progress.
There are about 5,000 people employed in 71 firms on the Park and there is a need now to secure change in the way people travel to work. The research revealed that 71% of the workers use daily cars to get to the park. The park holders want to solve this problem by providing other alternatives such as a more attractive public transport, improved cycle access with new cycle ways ant others.
The park offers many facilities such as: health and fitness club, bar and restaurant, conference centre, child care nursery, squash courts and cash machine. One of them is ERBI, a non-profit membership company for international life science. ERBI has a specific purpose: maximizing the global growth and competitiveness of their members.
