The Botanical Garden of the University of Cambridge is a botanical garden located in Cambridge, United Kingdom. It lies close to the Cambridge railway station between Hills Road to the east and Trumpington Road to the west.
It was founded for the University of Cambridge in 1831 by John Stevens Henslow (who is probably best known for being Charles Darwin’s teacher), the garden was opened in 1846. Many experts consider as the second largest botanical garden after the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
The planting is so attractive and the scientific value is so high that it compensates for the fact that the site is almost entirely on level ground.
The plants are distributed in many systematic organized areas like the Rock Garden, representing the alpine plants from the mountains of each continent; the tropical rainforest; the Lake and Water Garden; the alpine house; the historic Systematic Beds which display 1600 representatives of flowering plants of over 80 families and seasonal displays in the Glasshouses.
The garden hosts all kind of events throughout the year ranging from educational visits for the younger, courses for the adults or cultural and art events and exhibitions possible through a booking system.
Getting to the garden is eased by buses, by the fact that it is less than 5 minutes walk form the railway station or being less than a mile from the city centre. Here one can take a coffee at the local cafe or buy something from the shop.
