Constituting one of the main outdoor adventure destinations in the Phoenix, Arizona, metropolitan area, Camelback Mountain is situated within the greater Camelback Mountain Echo Canyon Recreation Area, roughly to the north of downtown Phoenix. Camelback Mountain is a favorite spot for hikers and rock climbers from the local area, and in fact many people travel a good distance to engage in these activities at Camelback Mountain.

Camelback Mountain was, according to archaeological evidence, a sacred place for the people of the Hohokam culture before European settlement. In the late 1800s, the area was designated as a reservation for various Native American tribes, although later the plans were changed and Camelback Mountain was submitted to private ownership and development. However, after many preservation campaigns, by 1968 Camelback Mountain was designated as a public city park, status which it retains till today.
