For sports fans, health nuts, and a whole bunch of Canadians and tourists in between, one hugely popular spot in Calgary is Canada Olympic Park.

Originally built for the 1988 Winter Olympics, when it served as the primary spot for luge, bobsledding, and ski jumping events, the park is gigantic and offers sports to urban dwellers year-round, long after the fever of The Olympics has died down. During the summer months, Canada Olympic Park is set up for mountain biking, with more than 15 miles of trails, and also for a number of outdoor series and concerts. Once the snow starts falling in the winter months, Canada Olympic Parks transforms into a hugely popular spot for snowboarding and skiing.

Located in western Calgary, just west of Bowness and a short distance from the Trans-Canada Highway, it's an easy drive from downtown Calgary. Since a number of city dwellers don't feel like driving all the way out to The Rockies just to hit the slopes, Canada Olympic Park is a huge asset to the urban population. During the winter months, the park is open until dusk, depending on the amount of snow accumulated.

In addition to regular slopes for skiing and snowboarding, in winter, the park also has a completely modern terrain park, complete with table tops, handrails, and a halfpipe that has been modified to be an exact duplicate of the one in Vancouver that professional Olympic snowboarders will be riding during the 2010 Winter Games.

Summer visitors make use of a number of the same facilities as the winter warriors, including putting their bicycles on the ski lifts, so there's no need to hike all the way to the top of the mountain, bike in tow.

A number of hotels actually overlook Canada Olympic Park and are much closer than those in the center of downtown, including Lake Crescent Lodge, Lake Quinault Lodge, and The Royal Victorian Motel.
