The hub of New Orleans’ mass transit system, and one of the busiest thoroughfares in the city, Canal Street was the original border between the Vieux Carre, or French Quarter, and the American Sector of the City, now known as the Central Business District. The Street is comprised of three lanes of traffic in each direction, as well as two bus and two streetcar lanes in the middle.

Canal Street runs from the Mississippi River, known as the “foot of Canal”, where the Canal Street Ferry docks, to the Greenwood Cemetery, four miles north. Canal Street was once the principle shopping area of New Orleans, and is the location of the first movie theater in the United States.
