Canberra Airport was once known as the Canberra International Airport which handled flights to and from Fiji in 2004. However, without the international Fiji flights, the airport was renamed. Today, this public airport is being used by 5 airlines – Brindabella Airlines, Qantas, QantasLink, Tiger Airways Australia, and Virgin Blue – which catered to almost 3,000,000 passengers in 2008.

The airport started out as a small airstrip in the 1920s. It was later used by the Royal Australian Air Force beginning in 1939. In 1998, the lease was sold to the Canberra International Airport Pty Ltd which initiated a lot of improvements and upgrades to facilities, buildings, staff, and services. For instance, the retail precinct, Majura Park, was added along with the Brindabella Business Park and Fairbairn.

Expansions to the runway and the passenger terminal allowed Canberra Airport to cater to more flights and passengers – prompting the management to propose that the airport become the “Sydney’s Second Airport” to address congestion problems in Sydney. However, the draft master plan was rejected for lack of information and community consultation. Still, a high-speed rail link problem may soon be implemented to link Sydney, Canberra, and Melbourne – a system that may soon make Canberra Airport as Sydney’s second. Various infrastructure projects had been announced in April 2009 – these include expansions on the passenger terminals.
