Canberra Centre

Hotels near Canberra Centre, Canberra, Australia .

Among the historic sites in Canberra, the Canberra Centre may seem as though it is a bit off, but it still has some significance in terms of the historical progression of the city. First and foremost, it is a shopping mall situated in Civic, Canberra, which opened in March 6, 1963 and was named as an Australian Capital Historic Site by 1997.

The main reason why Canberra Centre designated as a historic site is because it is the first shopping center located in Canberra to have operated a car park by Car Park Ticket Machines. The centre was opened by Robert Menzie, an Australian Prime Minister, and was first called the Monaro Mall. At the time it was crated, it was the first three-storey, fully air conditioned and enclosed shopping area. It was only until November 2, 1989 that it was renamed into the "Canberra Centre" by Rosemary Follet.

The centre initially occupied four city blocks spanning from Myer, David Jones, and City Market. However, in February 20, 2007, the centre had unfortunately suffered the wrath of a severe thunderstorm and was damaged by floods and severe hail.
