Candelaria Church

Hotels near Candelaria Church, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil .

Having begun construction in 1775, the Candelaria Church is named after a Spanish ship that almost sunk on its way to Brazil in the early 17th century. As the legend goes, upon their safe arrival in Rio de Janeiro, a group of the Spanish sailors created a small chapel, fulfilling the promise that they had made while praying to survive the stormy seas. Completed in 1609, Our Lady of Candelaria was in need of repair in 1775, when construction of the current Candelaria Church was initiated.

Construction spanned from 1775 to 1878, with additions such as the bronze doors and pulpits coming as late as 1931. As a result of the length of time of construction, Candelaria Church exhibits Baroque, Neo-Classical, and Neo-Renaissance elements, and was at one time the tallest building in the city of Rio de Janeiro. In addition to being a famous architectural and religious site, the Church was also the site of the 1993 Candelaria massacre, wherein a number of street children were murdered by Rio police officers.

The Candelaria Church is located in Praca Pio X, on Avenida Presidente Vargas, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Local hotel accommodations include the Windsor Guanabara Hotel, Center Hotel, Grande Hotel Sao Francisco, and the Rio’s Presidente Hotel. For more information visitária_Church.
