Cannery Row is the legendary street in Monterey immortalized in the eponymous Steinbeck novel. Formerly the site of many sardine canning factories, the street saw the industry decline in the 1950’s along with the local fishery. Cannery Row is now chiefly a historical spot and tourist attraction.
Today, the waters off Cannery Row are an important marine sanctuary. In the area, the sea lion population has made a comeback in recent decades. Besides that, sport fishermen have begun taking advantage of the nutrient-rich waters which rise from Monterey Canyon and produce impressive catches.
