Dedicated to the history, science, and cultures of the lower Cape Fear region the Cape Fear Museum is the oldest history museum in the State of North Carolina. Founded in 1898 as a collection of confederate relics, the museum has grown from a one-room collection staffed by volunteers to a professionally operated institution displaying more than 50,000 items. The Cape Fear Museum is located in the heart of Wilmington, North Carolina, within feet of the banks of the Cape Fear River.

Notable amongst the various exhibits at the museum are the extensive collection of Civil War artifacts, ranging from weaponry to scale models that document the Battle of Fort Fischer, and a number of hands-on science exhibits for children. The Michael Jordan Discovery Gallery, a children’s exhibit dedicated the ecology of the area, with a small display relating to the famous basketball player raised in Wilmington, is also a popular portion of the museum. The Cape Fear Museum is situated just outside of the waterfront district of Wilmington, within easy walking distance of a number of tourist attractions.

The Cape Fear Museum is located at 814 Market Street in Wilmington, North Carolina, and does have on-site parking available to visitors free of charge. Museum hours are from Tuesday through Saturday from 9 A.M. until 5 P.M., and Sunday from 1 P.M. until 5 P.M. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and college students, and $3 for children.
