Ever since the 1790s, Cape Henry Lighthouse has been keeping sailors safe in Chesapeake Bay. The lighthouse boasts the distinction of being the first in the entire country authorized by the United States government, with its construction the first federal project the country undertook after signing the Constitution.

Rebuilt in the 1870s, the Cape Henry Lighthouse was fully automated in the 1980s and is still used today to signal to ships out in the harbor. The exterior of the lighthouse is lovingly preserved to stay true to its original form, making for a picture-postcard view for those travelers and visitors.

The older version of the lighthouse is accessible to the public as a spot to gaze upon the sea, while the newer lighthouse is strictly for operational use only.
