Capitol Visitors Center

Hotels near Capitol Visitors Center, Austin, United States .

Anyone visiting Austin who wants to get to know a little more about the city itself and Texas in general will find a trip to The Capitol Visitors Center not just informative, but interesting, too. Located in the southeast corner of the Capitol, in a restored building that dates back to the 1850s, The Capitol Visitors Center is the oldest state office building in Texas.

More than just a historical site, the building hosts a number of exhibits, both temporary and permanent. Learn more about William Sydney Porter, later known as O. Henry once he launched his lucrative short story writing career, in The O. Henry Room, or check out a replica of the Capital dome where you can learn about the history and science behind one of the city's most recognizable landmarks.

In addition to the permanent exhibits, The Capitol Visitors Center also has a number of temporary installations on everything from the perspective of both Texans and Mexicans during the state's revolution wars, as well as cattle queens, Texas women who participated in cattle drives back when being a lady to most people meant staying at home.

Located right in the heart of downtown Austin, The Capitol Visitors Center is open Monday through Saturday from nine until five, and on sundays from noon until five. Parking for the visitor's center is affordable and close by, but most of the city's downtown hotels are just a short walk away, including various Hilton, Sheraton, and Doubletree hotels.
